Week 9

This week we continued our experiment from last week. We started with our sample intended for water washing. Just like with the Magnesol sample we heated the biofuel to 60 degrees Celsius then added 1/5 of the samples volume in water to the sample (20 mL) which was also heated to 60 degrees Celsius. We made sure to take the pH of the water before hand because we used tap water. We used tap water because our researched indicated that tap water worked better than distilled water (acidified water worked even better than tap water but we used tap water for its convince.) We then added the water to the oil and mixed it at 600 rpm for five minutes. Then we put the water wash in the centrifuge to separate the fuel and the water. We then moved on to the Magnesol-water wash where we heated the biofuel and added 2% of the samples weight in Magnesol and 1/5 of its volume in water and mixed it. We washed each sample twice, except the water wash which we were able to wash three times. We will finish washing the Magnesol, and Magnesol-water wash next week and then test each one to see how clean each sample is.
